Your Kids Eating Habits – Are you a good example?
Your kids want to be just like you. It is one of the greatest joys of being a parent. Whether it be doing your hair and makeup or the way you sit when you watch television, at one time or another they will notice. This also includes your eating habits. Do you set a good example for kids eating habits?
In this busy world it’s real easy to pick up dinner at a fast food restaurants. Now, you aren’t going to be able to do this 100% of the time, but it would be nice if you could, right? Therefore, the following is a few tips and ideas that will help you along the way. Even if you’ve never thought about how important you affect your kids eating habits.
The System
Most of us Almost everyone benefit from a good routine, but having one before dinnertime is very important in your child’s future. Even something as little as washing your hands before handling or eating food can go a long way. Sitting down with your family everyday at a certain time is crucial to their outlook of a daily plan as they get older. It’s a good way to start a routine; you just have to try to stick with it.
Once your routine is in motion then it’s time to think about the foods you prepare. To have your kids understand the difference of healthy and unhealthy food, take them grocery shopping with you. Browse through the produce section and talk about the assortment of fruits and vegetables. Preparing the meal together is also a great time to talk about the health benefits of foods and how important their eating habits are. This time can be also for talking about other important things such as how their day went, effects of smoking and drinking, or whatever they want to talk about.
When the food is ready and everyone sits down, remember, your children will be watching. So cutting and chewing your food in a proper manner will teach them the appropriate way. If you are chewing slowly, they will follow. Cutting your food in a specific direction? They will as well, but most likely after they’ve tried every other way their minds can think of doing. However, the chewing part is extremely important for their digestive system and to be socially accepted.

We all eat outside of our three meals a day and at some point you need to have a little talk about it with your kids. The facts say to replace chips and soda for raw vegetables and fruit and 100% juice. Discuss the moderation levels of sweets and make sure this one is repeated as the years go by.
By following these tips you will not only give your children the head start they need in daily life, but will also help keep the family life together. It’s so important to eat together, and if by chance they notice you don’t finish everything on your plate, don’t be afraid to tell them that it is OK. While wasting food is not good thing, we don’t want to overeat. They don’t have to like everything, but giving them a variety of food to choose from will help both of you in the long run.
